Townsville rallies for legacy, equity and opportunity at sport strategy consultation

29 May 2025

North Queensland’s voice rang loud and clear on Monday 26 May as locals gathered at the Townsville consultation for Queensland’s next 10-year sport and recreation strategy.

The community brought practical, inclusive and forward-thinking ideas to the table, focused on better supporting volunteers, growing participation, and ensuring Brisbane 2032 delivers legacy benefits well beyond the south-east.

Key feedback included:

  • Recognising and incentivising volunteers, including tax offsets, rewards and training
  • Strengthening school-club partnerships to improve access and engagement
  • Increasing the value and usability of sport vouchers to reflect cost of living
  • Building inclusive, climate-resilient, multi-use facilities through regional planning
  • Offering more flexible, tech-based participation options to engage young people

When asked what Brisbane 2032 means to them, locals were united:

“These Games must belong to all of Queensland.”
“It’s a chance to give our juniors real pathways—and bring Olympic sports north.”
“It creates an opportunity for increased activity and participation across all sports”

Now it’s your turn—consultation is open until 15 June 2025.
