Queensland Sport Strategy 2025

Let's shape the next decade of sport in Queensland to ensure the state becomes Australia’s sporting powerhouse — not just in 2032, but for generations to come.

What does 2032 mean for you?

Queensland is on the cusp of an extraordinary opportunity.

Hosting the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games provides not only the chance to deliver an exceptional sporting event, but also to build a lasting legacy that cements our state as the home of Australian sport.

To support this, we launched the discussion paper What does 2032 mean for you? to help guide the development of Queensland’s new Sport Strategy.

We asked Queenslanders to share bold ideas for how we can:

  • Help more people be active, no matter their background, ability or location
  • Make better use of local places and spaces
  • Support community sport and attract more volunteers
  • Deliver world-class sporting events
  • Build a strong, inclusive and innovative active industry
  • Maximise the legacy of Brisbane 2032

We invited individuals, clubs, communities and the sport industry to help us shape a strategy that supports people of all ages and abilities to be active and connected through sport.

Key themes

The following four themes guide our aspirations for sport over the next decade:

  • Enabling opportunities for participation that are safe, inclusive, and accessible so that all Queenslanders, regardless of location, can make positive changes needed to live more active and healthy lives.

    • What can be done to ensure all Queenslanders have the confidence and knowledge to be physically active throughout all life stages?
    • How do challenges such as time constraints, costs, caring responsibilities, work and transport impact your and/or your children’s participation?
    • How can the Queensland Government enable equitable access for all Queenslanders no matter where they live, their ability or their cultural background?
    • How can we promote health and other benefits of physical activity in ways that inspire movement?
    • Is there opportunity for greater collaboration and partnership across the active industry to deliver safe and inclusive practices?
    • How can innovation and data improve the sport ecosystem?
  • Building momentum in the lead up to Brisbane 2032 and beyond, supporting our active industry to be ‘Games ready’ and ensuring that our talent pathways are poised for success.

    • What does an aspirational Brisbane 2032 look like for you?
    • How can the Queensland Government support the evolution of the active industry to ensure ‘Games readiness’ to leverage the benefits of Brisbane 2032?
    • How can Queensland maximise legacy benefits of the Games across regional and remote parts of the state, including event attraction?
    • What can be done to ensure equitable access across the state for talent pathways?
    • How can sport help us tackle society’s big challenges in health, youth engagement, loneliness and ageing just to start? Imagine the possibilities and dream big.
    • Can sport bring innovation to your industry? Healthcare, events, leadership – we want to hear the bold ideas!
  • Supporting grassroots sport to get more Queenslanders moving, cultivating a strong sense of pride and belonging for community, participants and volunteers.

    • How can the Queensland Government support community sport organisations to thrive, build capability and adopt innovation?
    • What could encourage more people to volunteer in sport, including underrepresented groups of Queenslanders?
    • Are there missing opportunities for adults to participate in community sport and if so, how can we enable change?
    • How can cost pressures be improved for community sporting organisations?
    • How can governance be streamlined to make volunteering and participating in sport less onerous?
    • How can we give the community confidence that their sports are safe and regulated?
  • Activating places and spaces in the lead up to Brisbane 2032, championing greater use of existing sport facilities to increase community connection and inspire physical activity, as well as making sporting venues more accessible.

    • What facilities does your community need to be more active?
    • How can other potential places and spaces, for example school facilities and green spaces, be activated for greater use?
    • How can the Queensland Government continue to attract and deliver world-class sporting events?
    • How can we best enable climate adaptive and resilient infrastructure and facilities?

Next steps

The consultation period for the ‘What does 2032 Mean for You? Discussion paper closed on Sunday, 15 June 2025.

Over the coming months we will review all submissions and insights to develop the Sport Strategy. The Strategy is expected to be released later in 2025.
