Queensland Origin greats immortalised at Suncorp Stadium
A new permanent tribute to the greats of Queensland Rugby League has been unveiled at Suncorp Stadium.
The “Queenslander” wall celebrates male and female Origin players and Queensland representatives outside of Origin who have helped shape the game of rugby league.
The tribute celebrates 274 male and female Origin stars as well as 811 male and 140 female pre-Origin QRL Representatives dating back to 1908.
Suncorp Stadium General Manager Alan Graham said the venue has been the stage for Queensland rugby league stars for decades.
“Suncorp Stadium is synonymous with some of the greatest moments and players in rugby league history and it’s great to see that rich history become a permanent fixture of the venue,” Mr Graham said.
“Having this legacy on show for all our patrons and visitors adds to the history of the Stadium and allows fans to soak up all that makes Origin and the Queenslander spirit so special.”
At least seven new names will be added to the wall following the selection of Origin debutants in both the men’s and women’s series this year.
Queensland Rugby League CEO Ben Ikin said it’s important to recognise those who have helped shaped the game.
“To represent your state is an incredible honour and proud Queenslanders have done this with immense passion since 1908,” Mr Ikin said.
“It’s fantastic to have a physical acknowledgement of all the men and women who have created a lasting legacy for rugby league in Queensland, and to acknowledge the women who blazed a trail for our current women’s players.”
Former Origin Greats Board Member and Queensland Representative Karyn Murphy said having the women alongside the men shows the strides occurring in the game.
“Our women have a rich history contributing to the Queenslander spirit and having this tribute helps inspire the next generation,” Ms Murphy said.
“With the popularity of the women’s game, the current Origin players are becoming household names so it’s great to see the names of the women who paved the way for them celebrated as well.”
The tribute was designed by Populous with input from the Queensland Rugby League and their History Committee, the Former Origin Greats (FOGs) and the NRL.
