The 30th Challenge Games shine at Townsville Sports Precinct
The Townsville Sports Precinct hosted the 2024 Challenge Games in July, celebrating 30 years of fun and participation.
This iconic two-day event, designed for school children with disabilities, has become a cornerstone in Queensland's sporting calendar, drawing participants from across the state including regions as far-reaching as Mount Isa, Weipa, and Rockhampton.
This year's milestone event saw an impressive turnout of 1100 students, ranging from prep to grade 12, engaging in a diverse array of sports and activities. From long jump, shot put, and frisbee throws to wheelchair rugby league and table tennis, the Challenge Games offered something for everyone. The event also featured fun games like parachute and ball games, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and joy.
A highlight of the event was the Glitz and Glamour Disco held on Wednesday evening, where students had the opportunity to socialise and forge new friendships.
Special guest Carly Salmon, the current Co-Captain of the ParaMatildas, was present to inspire and support the participants. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 18 months old, Carly's journey from athletics—where she competed in numerous Athletics World Championships and the 2018 Commonwealth Games—to soccer, is a testament to her resilience and determination. She expressed her amazement at the number of students participating and the variety of sports offered, emphasising the importance of such opportunities for young people with disabilities.
The 30 year celebration also included the induction of 3 life members into The Challenge Games Committee. Founder Gail Brodie, and longstanding Committee Chair and members Lynne Derry and Robyn Hosking, were honoured for their dedication and commitment to the event's success over the years.
Looking ahead, the anticipation is already building for the 2025 Challenge Games, as the event continues to grow and inspire young athletes across Queensland.
