Known as the little club with the big heart, Benowa Bowls Club now has a wheelchair-friendly front entrance plus new, accessible toilets in the clubhouse.
The inclusive upgrades have been well received by bowlers and spectators, with the renovations recently put to the test by hundreds of competitors at the Australian Open tournament held at the venue.
The renovations are a major boost to the club’s partnerships with local schools, including Southport Special School, Benowa High, Robina High, Southport High, Miami State, Merrimac State and Aquinas College.
The club’s focus on youth development has seen it create school curriculum for several years, helping Gold Coast children of all abilities to discover and love the sport of lawn bowls.
Young bowlers have been at the heart of Benowa Bowls Club from the start, founded in 1978 by three bowlers under 45 years of age.
The club now boasts three pennant teams competing in divisions 3, 5 and 7 plus teams that compete in the Summer 9’s and local competitions throughout the year.
Benowa Bowls Club’s inclusive upgrades were funded with $347,289 from the Minor Infrastructure and Inclusive Facilities Fund, allowing more people of all abilities to play and spectate at the Gold Coast venue.
The club boasts two well-maintained bowling greens, pathways programs for aspiring junior and senior bowlers, plus regular social bowling sessions.
