Mackay voices a bold vision for the future of sport
Mackay locals brought big ideas and passion during their regional consultation session for Queensland’s next sport strategy, held on Thursday 29 May.
At the heart of discussions was a clear call for investment in regional facilities—so young athletes can stay in their communities and still reach for the stars. As one participant shared, “Many kids from Mackay have to move away to access elite-level training. We need to build the pathways here.”
Key themes that emerged included:
- Fit-for-purpose, inclusive and accessible sporting venues
- Greater collaboration to maximise facility use and plan for future needs
- Incentives and support to grow volunteer numbers across the region
- Better transport options to connect people with sport and recreation opportunities
- Investment in regional high-performance hubs and pathways
The group also shared a bold legacy idea: contacting every Queensland volunteer with a Blue Card to ask if they want to be involved in Brisbane 2032.
The consultation is open until 15 June 2025. Have your say at www.sport.qld.gov.au/sportstrategy
