More Queensland kids get into rugby as Lions come to town

04 Jul 2025

More than 4,000 Queensland school children are taking part in the ‘Play Rugby’ program, a joint initiative between the Queensland Government and Queensland Rugby Union.

The program is designed to support legacy outcomes from the British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia, encouraging more Queensland children to get involved in Rugby and be active.

We’ve provided financial support to help deliver Primary School Rugby 7s Hubs in Innisfail, Burdekin, Capricorn Coast, Fraser Coast, South Burnett and Goondiwindi.

The hubs include an inter-school carnival, school-based Play Rugby development programs, school focused coach education, provision of training and playing equipment to the hub, and school focused match official education.

The British and Irish Lions travel to Australia every 12 years, and the program will build on the excitement generated by the tour.

The Lions play two games at Suncorp Stadium, against the Queensland Reds on 2 July and the First Test against the Wallabies on 19 July.

Queensland Rugby Union General Manager of Community Rugby, Gaven Head welcomed the initiative.

"We see this support as a catalyst for sustainable growth in both school and club participation,” he said.

“We thank the Queensland Government for their backing and look forward to delivering these programs in the lead-up to the 2025 British and Irish Lions Tour and future global events.”
