Major Sports Facilities Regulation 2014
We are reviewing the Major Sports Facilities Regulation 2014 and inviting public feedback.
What is a sunset review?
Laws and regulations in Queensland automatically expire (or ‘sunset’) after 10 years unless they are reviewed and updated. This process is called a sunset review. The Major Sports Facilities Regulation 2014 is due to expire on 1 September 2026, having previously been exempted for a stated period.
Why is this regulation important?
The Major Sports Facilities Act 2001 and its regulations help manage and promote Queensland’s major stadiums and venues. These laws make sure venues can host national and international sport, entertainment, and special events.
The Major Sports Facilities Regulation 2014:
- Sets rules for special events at Suncorp Stadium, including the number of concerts allowed each year.
- Defines what counts as a major sporting event at Suncorp Stadium based on crowd size.
- Lists which facilities are officially classed as major sports facilities.
- Provides protections against ambush marketing at major sporting events.
Consultation
The regulation was updated after public feedback in 2024, and a discussion paper was released in April 2025 to seek further feedback on the operation of the regulation to ensure it is operating in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Consultation closed on Tuesday 6 May 2025.
Next steps
We will consider all feedback received during the public consultation process, and will seek to renew the regulation, including any changes to the regulation (subject to relevant approvals) in due course.
Any feedback received that was outside the scope of the regulation will be considered to support improvements in the management of events.
